POETIC DEVICES IN DAMI AJAYI’S A WOMAN’S BODY IS A COUNTRY

ABSTRACT

This work consists of an overview of the Poetic devices, deployed in Dami Ajayi’s "A Woman’s body is a country" in order to show the thematic preoccupation of his poems. This project work is limited to Dami Ajayi’s "A woman’s body is a country" although Dami Ajayi has written other spectacular literary works like; "Clinical Blues"(2014), "Affection and other incidents"(2022) and "A woman’s body is a country"(2017). For the purpose of this essay, our main focus will be on "A woman’s body is a country which is a collection of poems as it focuses more on the poetic devices used to demonstrate the thematic preoccupation of his poems. Textual analysis is employed as the methodology adopted in this study of the primary text; "A woman’s body is a country" . We identify instances of literary techniques and poetic devices used through critical reading of the poems, in order to analyze the social issues prevalent in the text. This study also adopts a Formalistic approach to literary criticism in the analysis of the poetic devices in the poem; "A woman’s body is a country" by Dami Ajayi. The collection of poems by Dami Ajayi "A woman’s body is a country" , although new, some scholars have been able to make some useful comments on the poem. It appears that their comments are passing comments, but they are quite impressive as they help readers to have insight into the poems. In conclusion, Dami Ajayi employs the use of various poetic devices to further make his collections interesting to read and to effectively pass his message to the readers.
