PLURAL FORMATIONS; EDO AND ENGLISH COMPARED

ABSTRACT

This study aimed at examining the formations of plural in Edo and English languages respectively. That is to say the research is a comparative study which is an aspect of linguistics widely studied, comparative linguistics consist of the study of two or more data of two languages. However, this study or research aims at; Comparing the plural formation or pluralization strategies of the Edo and English Languages. The research found out amongst the following; The pluralization strategies used in the Edo language and the English language and the differences between both language Pluralization strategies. The data collection was from a number of sources, including four competent speakers of the Edo language, as well as published resources on Pluralization in other languages. The study is descriptive and comparative. The research revealed that the Edo language Pluralization requires multiple strategies. The study show that Edo pluralizes nouns through pluralizer Àvbé, although substitution varies the noun's plural form is created by substituting the initial vowel in the singular form, as well as reduplication, Pluralization of pronouns, as well as verbs. The research also revealed how English language pluralizes nouns by adding 's', 'es', changing the consonant 'y' to 'ies', as well as changing the vowel at medial position, as well as irregular plurals and Pluralization of pronouns.
