ABSTRACT
The purpose of carrying out this experiment is to prove and determine the proximate and phytochemical components of Telfairia occidentalis (pumpkin leaf). Standard methods were used for the proximate analysis and phytochemical screening. The preliminary phytochemical screening of Telfairia occidentalis (Pumpkin) leaf extract using ethanol revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, glycerides, terpenoids, phenolics, eugenols, carbohydrates, alkaloids and saponins with saponins showing greater abundance in the sample while steroids was left undetected though present in the aqueous extract. For the proximate analysis of the sample, Moisture content, Ash content, Crude Fibre content, Crude Fat content and its Protein content were respectively determined to be 68.17±1.82%, 13.62±1.84%, 15.10±1.12%, 26.45±2.36% and 15.81±0.02%.
These levels of compositions of its bioactivity reveal its nutrients and it is therefore recommended to be taken because of the numerous nutritional and medicinal attributes ascribed to it.
