ABSTRACT The search for new natural antioxidants is a growing area of research due to their wide range of biological activities typically associated with the prevention, management of chronic diseases that originate from oxidative stress. Consequently,severalplantshavedemonstratedthepotentialtobeusedasnaturalantioxidants. This study aims to assess the antioxidant activity of the crude methanol extract of M o rin d a citrifolia (popularly called Noni) leaves. Inthisstudy,theantioxidantactivityofNoniwasdeterminedusingthreedifferentantioxidantscreeningtestmethodsnamely 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis[3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] (ABTS) and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay methods. The concentration of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, known to confer antioxidant properties on plants, were also quantified in the crude extract of the Noni leaves using total phenol and total flavonoidmethodsrespectively. TheresultsrevealedthevariousphytochemicalconstituentsofthecrudeextractofNonileavesnamelyalkaloids,flavonoids, carbohydrates, glycosides, tannins, terpenoids and phenols. It also compared the antioxidant activity of the plant to a standard, ascorbic acid (for DPPH and ABTS assays) and Ferrous sulphate heptahydrate (for FRAP assay) all of which portrayed the plant sample to possess insignificant antioxidant activity. Further studies are required to deeply explore the antioxidant potential of theplant and subsequently, identify and characterize the phytoconstituentsthat confer its antioxidant activity.
