ABSTRACT

Soursop is a fruit tree crop that is gaining prominence in recent times because of its reported numerous medicinal potential. This study was conducted to comparatively ascertain the phytochemical composition of soursop leaves, stem, pulp, and peel, collected from different three locations in Edo state. Three fresh fruit of soursop leaves and stems were collected from 3 different locations in Edo state (location 1 Isihor, Location 2 Emu, and location 3 Ikabigbo). The fruit was kept to ripen after which the pulp and peel were extracted. The leaf, stem, pulp, and peel were oven dried for 48 hours and blended into powder form for the determination of phytochemicals. Results were obtained for alkaloids, flavonoids, phenol, glycosides, saponins, and tannins. There was no significant difference p< 0.05 between the three locations and plant part for flavonoids, glycosides, phenol, and tannins while alkaloids and saponins were significantly different based on location and plant tissues. Alkaloids have the highest value for location 2 (Emu, 0.96 Mg/100g). Compare to other locations and the lowest for pulp (0.32 Mg/100g). Flavonoid content was high in leaves (4.21 RE/100g) compared to other plant tissues. Isolation and characterization of more important phytochemicals from soursop are recommended.
