PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND ANTIOXIDANT ANALYSIS OF Syzgium aromaticum and Xylopia aethiopica SEED EXTRACT

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate the phytochemical content and antioxidant of methanol extracts of Syzgium aromaticum and Xylopia aethiopica plants. From the results, phytochemical screening of Syzgium aromaticum and Xylopia aethiopica plant revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, anthraquinone, phlobatannin, alkaloids, terpenoids and cardiac glycosides, however, flavonoids was absent in Xylopia aethiopica and alkaloids was absent in Syzgium aromaticum. The estimation of antioxidant activity for Syzgium aromaticum and Xylopia aethiopica shows that Syzgium aromaticum had the highest antioxidant activity for reducing power more than negro pepper, dpph scavenging activity more than negro pepper, total phenolic content more than negro pepper, total flavonoids content more than negro pepper. The result of this study have shown that the methanol extract of Syzgium aromaticum and Xylopia aethiopica   plant possess good phytochemical and antioxidant composition. The extract has therefore immense potential for treatment of some ailments and justify the use of these plant in ethomedicine.
