ABSTRACT
Herbal medicine, sometimes referred to as botanical medicine or herbalism, is the utilization of plants and their extracts for therapeutic purposes. Alstonia boonei is known to have some phytochemical constituents that plays some significant roles such as antimicrobial and other uses. This research was carried out to evaluate the phytochemical constituents of Alstonia boonei leaf. The leaves of Alstonia boonei were collected from the senior staff quarters in the University of Benin, Benin-city, Edo state. Various materials and methods were employed to qualitatively determine the phytochemical constituents present in the leaf of Alstonia boonei. The leaves were air dried for 21days at room temperature, prior to extraction. The sample was grounded and subjected to cold maseration using aqueous for 24 hours. The extract was screened qualitatively for the presence of alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, glycosides, phenols, flavonoids, tannins and steroids. The screening test revealed that Flavonoids, steroids and glycosides were present in moderate quantities, while alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, phenols and tannin were present in high quantity. The result proves that Alstonia boonei leaf have potentials as medicinal plants.
