PHYTOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF SOURSOP LEAF EXTRACT

ABSTRACT

It is well known that the emergence of resistance mechanisms against antibacterial drugs is spreading worldwide. This is due to the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance factors through the acquisition of plasmids and transposable genetic elements from other microorganisms. The findings of this study revealed that Annona muricata demonstrated a high propensity of antimicrobial activity in a variety of systems traditionally and scientifically. Several In vitro and In vivo studies report that alum individually or in synergism have antimicrobial properties against a broad spectrum of bacterial and fungal species and harnesses other activities beneficial to humans. This study was aimed at assessing the antibacterial activities of Annona muricata aqueous extract against selected bacterial pathogens. Four bacteria genera Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas sp and Enterobacter sp and Klebsiella sp were used as test isolates. Antibacterial activities of Annnona muricata ethanolic extract were performed using the agar well diffusion method. It was observed that gentamycin control inhibited the growth of bacteria for all the different concentrations of Annona muricata. From the results, it was observed that the largest inhibition zone was recorded for Annona muricata ethanolic extract (100%) against Klebsiells sp (22.67±0.33 mm) and the least antibacterial activity was observed for the 50% concentration against Klebsiella sp (14.00±0.00 mm). The results of this study reveal that the Annona muricata ethanolic extract significantly inhibited the growth of the tested bacterial pathogens individually and has demonstrated the potential for application in traditional and modern medicine.
