ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to undertake phytochemical screening of Monodora myristica from different locations in Nigeria. Phytochemical analysis was carried out in the Central Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City Edo State. The seeds were examined after being collected from several locations: (Awka East), Ondo (west), Edo (south), and Abuja (north). They were then ground into a fine powder and preserved for phytochemical analysis in airtight containers. Photochemical analyses was carried out for Alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, Saponins, steroids and Tanins. All the data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using Analysis of Variance ANOVA. Results obtained showed that the alkaloid content ranged from 1.57% to 2.28% and the highest (2.28%) alkaloid content was recorded in Ondo state while Awka state indicated the highest flavonoid content (0.11%). Ondo had the highest Phenols content (0.34%) and Saponin content ranges from 8.68% to 14.95% across the locations. However, Edo state had the highest saponins content (14.95%). Ondo state had the highest steroids content (24.83%) while Abuja had the highest tannins content (0.42%) and Awka had the lowest (0.32%).
