ABSTRACT

The purpose of the current study was to examine the antibacterial activity and bioactive components of aqueous extracts and ethanol extract from Justicia carnea leaves on a few pathogenic organisms that can infect people. The antibacterial and therapeutic characteristics were investigated using using the agar well diffusion method to perform bioassay on target bacteria of medical importance, such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp as well as phytochemical screening of the plant constituents using standard qualitative methods. The screening process showed that phenol and tannins is in both aqueous and ethanol extract, while phlobatannins is only present in aqueous. The result shows that the ethanol leaf extract was slightly active against Enterococcus and Escherichia coli measuring clear zone of inhibition at 16mm and 10 mm respectively. There was no zone of inhibition in the aqueous extract for the three isolates. Hence, the ethanol extract exhibit slight antibacterial properties.
