ABSTRACT
Title: Phytochemical Analysis of Methanolic Extract from Chromolaena odorata Introduction: Chromolaena odorata, also commonly referred to as Akintola or Awolowo in the western part of Nigeria, is a highly invasive plant species acknowledged for its established traditional medicinal applications. The primary objective of this investigation is to ascertain the phytochemical constituents contained within the powdered leaf sample of Chromolaena odorata. Furthermore, the study aims to identify these constituent compounds utilizing Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and to quantify the alkaloidal and steroidal components within the crude extract with HPLC. Methodology: The methodology employed in this study encompassed the pulverization of airdried leaves, followed by extraction with methanol through the maceration process. Subsequently, the aqueous extract of the plant underwent comprehensive phytochemical analysis. The identification of compounds was accomplished through GC-MS, and their quantification was achieved using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Results: The findings of the phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of several compounds in the methanolic extract of Chromolaena odorata; flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids, and alkaloids. The GC-MS analysis unveiled a total of 38 distinct compounds, with four classes of alkaloids—Difluoroamine, Ethylenimine, Simulansamide, and Isoxazolidine— quantified through HPLC.
