ABSTRACT

An investigation of the impact of industrial effluent discharged into Ikpoba River by the Guinness Brewery plant and Eruvbi River by the 7up bottling company was carried out for four weeks in the month of January, 2022 in order to compare the results of the physicochemical parameters of the effluents from Guinness brewery and 7up bottling company. Water samples from point of discharge (mixing zone) by the industries into the rivers were analysed for physiochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, suspended solids, chloride, calcium, alkalinity, total hardness, magnesium, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, sulphate, phosphate, nitrate, ammonium-N, chemical oxygen demand and total dissolved solids using standard methods of analysis. The parameter ranges for both rivers were compared with results of analysis done by other authors. The result of this test was compared with standards of World health organization (WHO) guidelines and Nigeria standard for drinking water quality (NSDWQ) limit for discharge into Nigeria surface waters. Most of the physiochemical parameters were below the permissible limit except few which were above the acceptable permissible limits. This physico-chemical regime is an indication of the deteriorating water quality of both rivers as a result of the discharge of effluents from the industries.
