PHYSIOCHEMICAL AND MICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF BOREHOLE WATER FOUND IN SELECTED HOSPITALS

ABSTRACT

On a worldwide scale, groundwater represents the arena’s biggest and maximum essential source of fresh potable water. This study was carried out to determine the physiochemical and microbial properties of borehole water found in selected hospital within Benin City. Water samples were collected from selected boreholes within three major hospitals at different locations within Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The samples were collected into sterile sampling bottles and were transported to the laboratory in ice-pack for further analysis. Following standard laboratory and microbiological techniques, the physicochemical and bacteriological properties of the borehole water samples was determined. The results of the physicochemical properties were as follows: pH ranged from 4.69±0.21 - 6.06±0.33, salinity (11.00±1.62 - 78.00±3.58), temperature (25.60±3.63 - 25.8±3.65 oC), electrical conductivity (23.00±3.01 - 156.00±5.37 µS/cm), total suspended solid (0.75±0.03 – 1.30±0.08 mg/ml), turbidity (1.58±0.10 – 2.73±0.11 NTU), nitrate (0.50±0.02 – 1.05±0.05 mg/ml), phosphate (0.11±0.01 – 0.23±0.00 mg/ml), sulphate (0.88 – 1.84 mg/ml), dissolved oxygen (0.30±0.01 – 0.62±0.04 mg/ml), biological oxygen demand (0.02±0.00 – 0.03±0.01 mg/ml) and chemical oxygen demand (0.38±0.02 – 0.81±0.09 mg/ml). The total heterotrophic ranged from 0.30±0.5 – 1.83±0.5 cfu/ml and coliform counts ranged 0.48±0.0 – 3.91±0.7 cfu/ml) respectively.
