ABSTRACT
Irrespective of the language, words in isolation are uttered in full, but undergo changes in a connected speech. Nigerian Pidgin is not left out. Though it has not gained ground to being an officially recognized language, but its utterances possess the changing feature of connected speech. This study examines the phonological processes in Nigerian Pidgin manifested in the spontaneous speech of market traders in Benin City, Edo state. The markets visited are Ekosodin, Uselu, Ring Road, and New Benin markets.
The data utilized in this study were derived from twenty four audio recordings of the pidgin discourse of market traders recorded spontaneously by the researcher. The data used are transcribed for clearer analysis. In identifying the features of the manifested phonological processes, the findings of this research identify the 'Nigerian-ness' (the peculiarities) of Nigerian Pidgin which place more prestige on the language.
