ABSTRACT
This project work is a study on the phonological and morphological processes in Urhobo language. The essence of examining phonological and morphological processes in Urhobo is to be able to examine the underlying segments in the language and how different morphemes are combined with each other to form words in Urhobo language. This work adopts the Generative phonological model for phonological processes while the morphological processes uses the item - and - arrangement and item-and-process method which shows how these processes operate in the language.
This work discussed phonological processes in areas such as Elision, glide formation, insertion and contraction for phonological processes while it discussed compounding, borrowing and borrowing and coinage for morphological processes. The phonological processes shows the underlying segments in the languages and also the changes that occur during these processes while the morphological processes show how morphemes are combined with each other to form new words and also increase the vocabulary of the language by using examples from Urhobo language. The findings of this work are useful for both native speakers of Urhobo language and also as a source of reference for linguistic researcher.
