ABSTRACT
Five (05) samples were acquired in the field from road cut exposures along Okpella and environs. They include: Charnockite, pegmatite, granite, marble and labradorite. These samples were analyzed utilizing thin section petrography. The samples were subdivided in two slides per sample making a total of ten slides. Modal composition of these samples indicated the presence of minerals like quartz, feldspar, orthopyroxene and calcite. In all, quartz and feldspars proved to be more abundant than any other mineral, except for marble that proved to have a dominance of calcite and the granite the exhibited a relatively relevant amount of hypersthene. The sample was termed a hypersthene granite. Most of the rocks around the area of Okpella and environs proved to share similarity in mineralogical composition with rocks of granitic origin. However, marble was an exemption as it is metamorphic and displayed massive amount or dominance of the mineral calcite. Petrographic analysis of rocks is carried out utilizing electron microscopes and cameras to generate photomicrographs of rock samples in thin section slides.
