PESTICIDE LEVELS IN WATER, SEDIMENT AND FISH (Tilapia zilli) - HUMAN HEALTH IMPLICATION OF IKPOBA RIVER

ABSTRACT

The contamination of pesticide in Water, Sediment and Tilapia zilli from Ikpoba River (Iyoha) was investigated to evaluate the pollution status and potential health hazard in river system. A total of seventeen (17) pesticides residue (Alpha-BHC, Gamma-BHC (LINDANE), Beta-BHC, Heptachlor, Heptachlor Epoxide, Aldrin, Diedrin, Endrin, 4,4 DDT, Endosulfan I, Endosulfan II, Endosulfan Aldehyde, Endosulfan Sulfate, Phosphoro Methyl Glycine, Diazinon, Atrazine and Carbofuran) were analyzed using Gas Chromatography (GC) analysis equipped with 63Ni Electron Capture Detector. The concentration of pesticide residue ranged from ND to 0.0366 μg/L for water sample, ND to 0.0496μg/L for sediment samples and ND to 0.0016μg/L for Tilapia zilli sample. There was a clear dominance of the Organochlorine; Beta BHC, Gamma BHC and Aldrin in all matrixes. Health risk assessment indicate that the consumption of contaminated fish (Tilapia zilli) from Ikpoba River (Iyoha) have no potential health implication.
