ABSTRACT

Today in the business world, a good number of firms and Business units are shifting the attention from looking at the organization as a whole to focusing on a group (sub units) as a way of developing and maximizing the human capital potentials of its employees in an attempt to achieve operational or good organizational performance.

However, the answer to the issue or question of whether a group will succeed or fail particularly in terms of job performance is dependent on the individual composition of the members of such group. Of course, this composition boils down to the varied attitude and disposition displayed by group members. This is because good personalities make up a good work group and the reverse is also true.

Therefore, this research assessed how personality traits affected and still affects the group performance of corporate organizations using that of Coca Cola PLC Benin Branch as a case study.

Regarding methodology, the data used during the course of this research were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The management and employees of Coca Cola PLC Benin were issued some carefully designed questionnaires. The scholarly contributions gathered from textbooks, journals, magazine, articles and newspapers on personalities, groups and individual psychology also assisted the Researcher in compiling this report.

After a careful, elaborate and diligent survey, the Researcher used the findings revealed from analyzing and interpreting the data to provide some factual suggestions and recommendations.

This research indicated that the various traits of personality exhibited by group Members are open to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, introversion  and agreeableness personality.

Also, the research pinpoints some of the obvious negative effects of personality on group performance to include delayed output, poor performance and incomplete output. Of course, as expected, the researcher did not draw the beautiful curtains of the research without suggesting ways of possible improvement on group performance particularly with regards to individual personality traits.

The findings and candid recommendations presented here will greatly help improve group performance in various corporate organizations in Nigeria especially when implemented with little or no reservations by managers of these various organizations.
