PERFORMANCE OF OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus L) AS AFFECTED BY PLANT SPACING AND NUMBER OF PLANTS PER STAND.

ABSTRACT

A field experiment was carried out on the okra plant (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) to determine the performance of okra as affected by plant spacing and number of plants per stand. This experiment was conducted in the southern region of Nigeria at the Faculty of Agriculture Teaching and Research Farm, University of Benin, Edo state Benin City. The treatment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD), and was replicated four times. The following parameters were evaluated: number of capsules, number of seeds, length of seeds, width of capsules, seeds yield and the stover weight of the plants. From the results obtain, it was observed that the performance of okra was not affected by plant spacing and number of plants per stand. However, the plant spacing of 50×25 cm with 1 plant/stand performed the best. Consequently, it is recommended for adoption by farmers in the zone the research was carried out.
