ABSTRACT
The standard plant population for maize over many decades has been 53, 333 plants/ha. In recent times, grain yield of maize has been tested at 66, 666 plants per ha and seems to be promising. This study was conducted to compare the yields of maize when grown at these plant populations. The field experiment was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture Teaching and Research Farm, University of Benin, Benin City (06o 20‘50”N, 5o 37’ 23”E; 78 m above sea level), Nigeria. Maize cultivar Sammaz 51 obtained from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Nigeria, was sown in the late season of 2021. The trial was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 15 replications. Data were collected on plant height, fresh ear yield, 1000-seed weight, grain yield and stover yield. Results showed that there was no significant difference in plant height, fresh ear yield, 1000-seed weight and grain yield for the two plant populations. However, stover yield was significantly higher at a plant population of 66,666 than at 53,333 plants/ ha-1 .
