PERCEPTION OF UTILISATION AND KNOWLEDGE OF DANGERS OF PUBLIC TOILETS SYSTEM AMONG FEMALE UNDERGRADUATES OF UNIVERSITY OF BENIN.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to access the perception of utilisation and knowledge Of the dangers of public toilets system among female undergraduates of university of Benin. The public toilets system is an important facility in every community and without public toilets, then the structure is not complete. There are many different reasons why female undergraduates do not use the public toilets which could be vandalisation and a breeding ground for disease pathogens that affect the female students health. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study and thus the data for the study were collected with the use of a questionnaire. After expert's validation of the instrument, it was tested for reliability. The population of the study comprises of female undergraduates (3376) in university of Benin out of which three hundred and thirty eight (338) female undergraduates were randomly selected. Four research questions were raised and answered by the study. Findings from the study revealed that there is no effective public toilets system in university of Benin as a result of unavailability of toilets facilities. It also showed that the attitude of female undergraduates toward public toilet use is negative as majority of female undergraduates find it discomforting when using it and less priority on improving the privacy and safety measures in the public toilets for female students. The study also showed that majority of the female undergraduates are aware of the dangers of public toilets system in university of Benin and few female undergraduates are not aware. The study revealed that majority of the female undergraduates strongly believed that there are impact of the use of public toilets on the health of female undergraduates
