PERCEPTION OF MIXED-USE SPACES IN BENIN CITY’S DEVELOPING URBAN SETTLEMENTS

ABSTRACT

This study delves into the perception impact of mixed-use spaces within Benin city’s urban settlements, emphasizing on their relevance in the context of new town development. The term "perception" refers to the study of how the social environment of urban spaces influences the psychological experiences, behaviors, and well-being of individuals and communities. This aspect of the research dissertation would investigate how the design, layout, and functionality of mixed-use and multipurpose spaces in urban settings affect various social and psychological factors. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, this research examines the ways in which these versatile spaces influence social interactions, community cohesion, and individual well-being. By exploring case studies and analyzing urban planning strategies, the study aims to identify the key factors that contribute to the success of such spaces in fostering a sense of belonging and enhancing overall urban livability. Additionally, the research assesses the challenges and considerations associated with the implementation of mixed-use and multi-purpose designs in diverse urban environments, offering insights into the approaches required for effective implementation. The findings of this study contribute to the ongoing discourse on urban development by providing recommendations for planners and policymakers seeking to create sustainable, vibrant and socially enriching new towns.
