ABSTRACT
The advent of the Internet has been perceived by many as an advantageous tool for growth and development. The study aimed to determine the perception of cybercrime among students of the University of Benin, Ekehuan Campus. The use of Differential Association and Situational Crime Prevention theories helped in guiding the researcher. The study employed a quantitative survey method and adopted a systematic sampling technique. The questionnaire with close-ended questions was administered to 285 selected respondents. Findings indicate that cybercrime is a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the values of the society and cannot be easily eradicated. Also, the causes of youths’ indulgence in cybercrime activities are unemployment, poverty, corrupt leaders/ authorities, failed promises of government coupled with the residual bitterness towards the scavengers of Nigerian resources. The study concludes that cybercrime is an illegal activity which University students see as detrimental to society. The researcher recommended the creation of more jobs through reviving dormant companies and keying into fresh ideas from the youth in creating avenues for labour marketing which will in turn lead to employment of youths.
