ABSTRACT
Social media has become an integral part of contemporary society, shaping interpersonal relationships and societal dynamics. This research explored the perceptions of Benin residents regarding the impact of social media on divorce and separation among couples in Nigeria. The study aims at assessing the influence of social media platforms on marital relationships, examine the correlation between social media usage and marital instability, evaluate the effectiveness of social media in exacerbating or mitigating marital conflicts, and elucidate the potential disadvantages of excessive social media engagement on marital stability. Utilizing a survey methodology complemented by qualitative interviews, data was collected to analyze the extent to which social media contribute to the prevalence of divorce and separation among couples in Nigeria. The findings of this study revealed that Benin residents believes that social media usage contributes to divorce and separation among couples in Nigeria, furthermore, it was discovered that social media can affect the stability and longevity of marriages both positively and negatively. The researcher concluded that while social media undeniably shapes the material of contemporary of marriages in Nigeria, its influence is not deterministic. Additionally, fostering a culture of open dialogue can help couples navigate the complexities of modern relationships. Based on the conclusion, it is recommended that couples prioritize quality time together by setting aside dedicated periods void of digital diversion, in addition to this, support groups and forums where couples can share their experiences and seek a safe space should be encouraged.
