PERCEPTION AND KNOWLEDGE OF OCULAR ANTIBIOTICS RESISTANCE; UNIVERSITY OF BENIN COMMUNITY AS A CASE STUDY.

ABSTRACT

Antibiotic resistance is a growing global health concern, with ocular infections increasingly affected by resistant bacterial strains. The misuse and overuse of ocular antibiotics contribute significantly to resistance, leading to treatment failures, prolonged infections, and increased risks of vision impairment. This study aimed to assess the perception and knowledge of ocular antibiotic resistance among members of the University of Benin community, examining awareness levels, attitudes, antibiotic use behaviors, sources of antibiotic information, and the role of healthcare professionals. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among students across the campus of the University of Benin. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data, and a total of 422 valid responses were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics via SPSS version 25.0. The findings revealed significant knowledge gaps, with 65.2% acknowledging ocular antibiotic resistance as a concern, yet 27.5% remaining unsure. Misconceptions were prevalent, with 35.8% believing that prolonged use of ocular antibiotics ensures better treatment outcomes, while 46.5% incorrectly thought antibiotics could treat viral eye infections. Risky behaviors were also identified, as 40.4% admitted to self-medication, 60.5% discontinued antibiotic use once symptoms improved, 33.7% shared antibiotics, and 68.8% used leftover antibiotics for new infections. While 52.8% of respondents relied on healthcare professionals for antibiotic advice, 18.3% did not seek any guidance before using ocular antibiotics, and 47.3% were indifferent about whether doctors adequately explained prescriptions. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted education, stricter prescription regulations, and improved healthcare provider communication to combat ocular antibiotic resistance. Universities should integrate antibiotic resistance awareness into curricula, policymakers should enforce stricter regulations on over-the-counter antibiotic sales, and healthcare professionals should enhance patient education to promote responsible antibiotic use. Implementing these strategies will help preserve the effectiveness of ocular antibiotics and prevent the further spread of antibiotic resistance.
