ABSTRACT
This study is to investigate the influence of peer groups on teaching and learning of chemistry among undergraduate students . A case study of university of Benin in Edo state. Four research questions were raised in order to carry out this study. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study were 10 selected faculties in the university of Benin.The sample of the study was hundred(100) students randomly selected. The instruments was face validated by my supervisor to determine the instrument's reliability, The data were collected with questionnaire instruments and analyzed using mean and standard deviation . The results revealed that peer group has a very high influence on the teaching and learning process among undergraduates in the university, with peer group showing influence on their, motivation, classroom dynamics and study habits. Based on the results, it was recommended that since there is significant relationship between peer group and academic performance of students therefore school administrators even parents/guardians have a role to play in monitoring the type of peers their students engage with in school and since the peer groups have an influence on study and such influence can be positive or negative therefore there is a need for teachers to have greater supervision and regulation on the students while they’re in school and monitor the type of peer groups they belong to and Students should imitate or form friendships with classmates who will positively influence their learning positively.
