SUMMARY
This study was carried out to examine patrimonialism in the Nigeria Army Force and its Effect on National Security. The study looked into the historical origin and function of the Nigerian Army in national security, it provided a deep understanding of the concept and the question of patrimonialism in the Nigerian Armed Forces, and examined the effect of patrimonialism in the Nigerian Army and national security. The act of Patrimonialism was revealed to be a system of authority based on an individual, where the state/organization itself, and the its affairs, are the personal interest of the ruler. Everyone within this structural system owe their position and loyalty to the one leader who is the head of the organization. A careful examination of the Nigerian Armed Forces revealed that this has been the system operated by the Nigerian Army. What this means is that there is high level of patrimonialism in the Nigerian Armed Force. The idea of establishing the Nigerian Army emanate from the need of maximum security for Nigeria. This led to the establishment of the Nigeria Army whose origin can be traceable to three colonial military units which are Glover’s Hausas established in 1862 by Captain John Glover to defend Lagos, the Royal Niger Company Constabulary established in 1888 to protect British interests in Northern Nigeria, and the Oil Rivers Irregulars, created in 1891.
