PARENTS’ COMMITMENT, AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS AS PREDICTOR OF PUPILS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study examined parent commitments, and socio-economic status as predictor of pupil’s academic achievement of primary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. Five research question were raised to guide the study. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design, all the parents of primary school children Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State formed the population of the study. A sample size of 60 was used for the study and they were drawn from 6 public school in Oredo Local Government Area. The research instrument was a checklist, the data were analysed using mean and standard deviation, the findings that emerged were: the level of parental involvement in pupils’ education in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State , significant influences parental commitment on pupils academic in Oredo Local Government Area Edo State was moderate, the level of academic achievement of pupils in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State is moderate, A moderate positive relationship exists between pupils academic achievement and level of parental commitment, socio economic status significant influences parental commitment on pupils’ academics in Oredo Local Government Areal, Edo State, there is a significant variation of parental commitment on academic achievement based on socio economic background. Based on the findings the following recommendations were made: parents should provide more time for their children in other to enhance the children’s academic performance, government should implement financial support programs to assist families with school related expenses ensuring that all children have access to necessary resources.
