PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN'S ACADEMICS PERFORMANCE IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, BENIN CITY EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the relationship between parental involvement and academic performance among pre-primary school pupils in Oredo Local Government Area. The research aimed to identify the key components of parental involvement, determine its importance and influence on academic achievement, and explore strategies for enhancing parental involvement in the academic development of pre-primary school pupils. A descriptive survey design was employed, with a sample of 60 participants (parents and teachers) selected from pre-primary schools in the area. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and correlation analysis. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between parental involvement and academic performance, indicating that parental involvement significantly enhances the academic performance of pre-primary school pupils. Specifically, the study found that parental involvement in activities such as homework assistance, attending parent-teacher conferences, and volunteering in the classroom had a positive impact on pupils' academic achievement. The study highlights the critical role of parental involvement in shaping a child's educational journey, academic progress, overall well-being, and long-term success. Recommendations include establishing clear communication channels between parents, schools, and pupils, offering diverse involvement opportunities, communicating with teachers, creating a supportive learning environment at home, promoting parental involvement in education policy, and providing workshops and resources for parents to support their child's learning.
