SUMMARY
A noteworthy contribution of this essay to pandemic and alienation studies recognizes the paradoxical nature of alienation. This is found in the two chapters which make up the extra essay. Alienation is a term associated with a negative human relationship. This is however considered helpful in the pandemic era as every aspect of alienation is considered useful in guaranteeing safety for human lives. Elements of alienation considered in this essay include self-isolation, social distancing, quarantine, staying at home, mask wearing and several others. The poet, Enyeribe constructs his argument in the form of a supposition. He looks at the benefits of adhering to safety protocols in order to be safe. He envisages a time when the pandemic will be over. His technique of persuasion is anchored on a projection of an ideal future devoid of pandemic. While anticipating this ideal time, the poet counsels the people to leverage the advancement made in technology to mitigate the pain of physical separation. Thus the speaker suggests “Skype”, a kind of videotelephony, video conference calls and voice calls. The poet in his view believed that a time is coming when lovers and humanity will come together again and then physical contact will be re-invigorated.
