ABSTRACT

Five (5) outcrop samples collected from Erede – Usen, Benin City were processed for palynological analysis in order to establish the age and paleoenvironment of deposition through the use of the diagnostic palynomorphs species recovered from the samples located in the Niger Delta Basin of Nigeria. Samples were subjected to palynological slide preparation to identify the presence of palynomorphs. The palynological analysis of the Erede –Usen outcrop show a total of one hunred and one (101) recovered forms, compising of twenty two (22) spores, seventy three pollens (73) and six (6) diatoms. Diagonistic palynomorphs were recovered and this includes Longapertites sp., Laevigatosporites sp., Cyathidites sp., Monocolpites sp., Tricolporopollenites sp., Proxapertites operculatus, Retitricolporites irregularis, Crototricolpites crotonoisculptus, Longapertites sp. and Cyathidites sp. Based on the diagnostic palynomorphs identified in the recovered Erede – Usen outcrop samples of the Niger Delta Basin, the age is interpreted to be Paleocene. And the paleoenvironment is predominantly terrestrial (continental) with open rainforest to savannah vegetation.
