ABSTRACT

The comprehensive analysis of the origins and development of Nigeria-China relations provide valuable insights into the complexities, challenges, and opportunities. That have characterized the bilateral partnership over time. The historical background of Nigeria-China relations reveals a longstanding relationship rooted in early trade interactions and cultural exchanges. Chinese traders had earlier explored. The maritime route along the West African coast, establishing contact with local communities and laying the foundation for future relations. The bilateral ties between the two countries have significantly evolved over the years, with China emerging as a key strategic partner for Nigeria in several areas. Chinas first official contact with the People's Republic of China (P.R.C) was in 1960, when it was invited to the country's independence celebrations. The delegation delivered congratulatory messages from Zhou Enlai and the late Vice-Premier, Marshall Chen Yi. In their message, the Chinese leaders acclaimed “the great victory won by the Nigerian people in their struggles against colonialism”. Nigeria seemed to have reciprocated this gesture when on gaining admission to the United Nations (UN) later that year supported PRC's membership in the world body. Nigeria China relations has grown, particularly in the economic area.
