ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF ZARIA INTO AN URBAN CENTER UP TO THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the summary of the investigation of the developments of Zaria and how the Fulani jihad and the British colonial rule had been important actors in the development of Zaria into an urban Zaria. These actors had brought about the change in both the socio-cultural, economic and political institutions in Zaria. The chapter includes among others the conclusion, findings and suggestions for further study on the subject. Prior to the event of the Fulani Jihad, Zaria was ruled by the Hausawa also known as the Habes. The Hausa rulers have been known for engaging in practices that have to a large extent hindered growth and these practices included; adulteration of islam, imposing illegal and excessive non-Islamic taxes, perversion of justice among others. The Hausa kings have been biased in the treatments given to the Fulani and the Hausa, the Fulanis were treated like a second class citizen and this had caused them to mumble and grumble. This situation had made the Fulani accept the message of Uthman Dan Fodio, as he had promised the Fulanis deliverance from bad rulers into a land that will only consist of the practice of the doctrines of Allah. This ushered in the event of the Jihad that was regarded as the Holy war by the Fulani. This was the first stage of the significant changes in Zaria. For better and more organized research, the study was grouped into five different chapters.
