ORGANISATIONAL COMMITMENT AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN BENIN CITY, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study examined the influence of organisational commitment on employee performance in deposit money banks in Benin City. Three research questions were raised and analysed in other to accomplish the purpose of this study, while survey design method was used in the study. The population of the respondents was drawn from four (4) deposit money banks in Benin City, Edo State. A total of 195 questionnaires were distributed. The instrument used for the collection was questionnaire and was statistically analysed using multiple regression analysis method. The findings of the study revealed that there was a relationship between affective commitment and organisational performance; there was a relationship between continuance commitment and organisational performance; and there was a relationship between normative commitment and organisational performance. The study recommended that management should live up to its responsibility by motivating its employees through pay satisfaction, effective pension plan, training and development, effective performance appraisal and other factors that have a significant effect on employee job  performance, if they want to become a leader and wax stronger in a global competitive environment. Also, management should provide very conducive work environment that will recognise the work efforts of organisational members in order to make them contribute positively to the attainment of the corporate objectives of the organisations.
