ABSTRACT
The study examined the internal structures of coined words in Edo. The study was guided by the need to account for the morphological and phonological processes involved in the formation of coined words in the language. The data analysed in this study was collected primarily from native speakers of the language. The theoretical framework employed in this work is the descriptive linguistic theory. The study shows that affixation is the morphological process that is mainly employed in the coinage of Edo words, while phonological processes such as elision, glide formation and assimilationare mostly employed. The study concludes that for words to be coined in Edo, they have to go through these processes and they are mostly derivational.
