SUMMARY
As earlier pointed out in the introduction that the exploration and exportation of oil has been the major focus of attraction in the entire business sectors of Nigeria is never and can never be in doubt. For the best part of five decades or more, the oil sector contributes more than 90% of the sovereign wealth of Nigeria. It is however noticed in the course of this thesis that the poor management of the oil sector, the federal government and its foreign partners has no doubt led to the rise and growth of tensions, agitations and hostility and a whole lot of criminal activities in the oil rich Niger Delta region. The hostility and tension is majorly caused by what is known as Niger Delta contestation; marginalization, deprivation and injustice.
Gbaramatu kingdom that is made up of about fifty communities became one of the major causalities of this Niger Delta contestation. The kingdom has farming, fishing and trading as its major occupation and sources of livelihood which has been greatly affected in recent times because of the continuous spills of oil into the streams, swamps, rivers and even land in the kingdom and it has affected the eco-system of the area thereby making life very un-meaningful and miserable for the indigenes. The attempts to make life meaningful and more pleasurable by the inhabitants of the region led to the development of youth restiveness and militarism/militancy leading to massive vandalization of pipelines, kidnapping of expatriates, complete shutdown of flow stations, and others.
