ABSTRACT

The central goal of this work was to investigate the place of oil as the most valuable mineral resource in Nigeria, and its political relevance in Ughelli Local Government Area. The region has been proven to generate 7.6 percent of Nigeria’s total oil production, a sector which contributes over seventy percent to the country’s revenue. This immense value has manifested in resource struggle over the mineral to gain access and control over the oil wealth. Concurrently, control over this resource translated to control over political power. Taking these manipulative political struggles for oil control into consideration, this study examined the impacts of these political acts on the development of the Ughelli Local Government Area, how it slowed down the growth and advancement of the different sectors of the economy and generally stifled a steady rate of progression in the region.
