ABSTRACT
This study examined the influence of occupational stress, decomposed into role ambiguity, role conflicts, role overload, lack of social support and inappropriate work environment, on job satisfaction among nurses in public hospitals in Benin City. To achieve the objectives of the study, three hundred and four (304) nurses in the three following public Hospitals: University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Central Hospital and the Stella Obasanjo Women and Children Hospital in Benin City, were sampled. Data were however elicited from only 302 respondents out of the total sampled respondents. The elicited data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. The findings of the study revealed that except role ambiguity, other stressors, which are role conflicts, role overload, lack of social support and inappropriate work environment have significant but negative influence on job satisfaction. On the basis of this, the study recommends that management of public hospitals in Benin City should create supportive work culture through reward and incentives, switch to solar energy which is noiseless, cost efficiency and more environmentally friendly as well as stop assigning two or more incompatible job activities to nurses
