INVESTIGATION INTO THE INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE LOWERING EFFECT AND WOUND HEALING EFFECT OF AZADIRACHTA INDICA LEAF, STEM AND ROOT EXTRACTS IN RABBIT EYES

ABSTRACT

Azadirachta Indica, a plant native to the Indian subcontinent, is known for its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Its use in managing eye conditions like ocular hypotony and ocular hypertension is crucial due to their harmful effects on the eye, leading to irreversible blindness. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Azadirachta Indica leaf, stem, and roots extracts on intraocular pressure (IOP) and wound healing in New Zealand rabbits.16 healthy New Zealand rabbits were grouped using a simple random sampling technique. Ethanolic extracts of Azadirachta Indica leaf, stem bark, and root bark were prepared and administered topically twice daily. The Azadirachta Indica leaf was used for the wound healing experiment, administered twice daily. Body weight, intraocular pressure, and fluorescein staining were measured before the extracts were applied.The results are presented in three tables;Table 4.1 shows the mean IOP values for the baseline condition,where no treatment was applied.The one-way ANOVA revealed a significant difference in IOP Day 2 with the control group having significantly higher IOP than the leaf,root and stem groups.Table 4.2 present the mean IOP values during the inducement period,significant difference in IOP was observed on Day 1,3,4,5,6,7,8, with the root group having significantly lower IOP than the leaf and stem groups and no significant difference were noticed on the remaining days(2,910,11,12,13 and 14).Table 4.3 shows the mean IOP values during the treatment period.On Day 3 (F(3,8) = 5.121, p = 0.021) a significant difference in IOP was observed,post-how analysis revealed that the control group had significantly higher IOP than the leaf and root groups.In conclusion, Azadirachta Indica root and leaf were effective in lowering intraocular pressure and had an effect on wound healing. These findings could contribute to further research and offer an economical alternative to managing IOP disorders.
