NOLLYWOOD MOVIES' INFLUENCE OF FOREIGN CULTURE AMONGST UNIBEN STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

The study report is based on Nollywood movies' influence of foreign culture amongst University of Benin students. Three Nollywood movies were analyzed as case study; Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Glamour Girls and Far From Home. This project aimed to explore the influence of Nollywood movies on the adoption of foreign culture amongst UNIBEN students. It examined the fundamentality of culture to a nation, referencing the Nigerian Film industry, Nollywood, as a major cultural agent who either make or mar the Nigerian rich cultural heritage through choice of film content production. The motive of the research topic was further explained by the researcher using the theories of Cultural Diffusion and Cultural Imperialism. The researcher utilized content analysis and survey research designs, which unraveled that Western fashion and Western values are the most common foreign cultural elements that are portrayed in Nollywood movies. Feedback from questionnaires uncovered that UNIBEN students incorporate learnt foreign culture into their personal lives which generates negative consequences like loss of Nigerian traditional values and identity crisis. To this end, the researcher recommends a revamping of the Nigerian film regulatory bodies and incredible attention to be paid to film censorship.
