ABSTRACT
Work-related noise can pose risks, especially with prolonged exposure. The study assessed the noise exposure and prevalence of acoustic effects among sawmill workers in Benin City. The noise levels were measured using a calibrated noise level meter. A cross-sectional survey was also conducted with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire administered to sixty (60) randomly selected sawmill workers. Results obtained revealed that the average morning noise level ranged from 99.5 – 117.2 dBA, while the average afternoon noise level ranged from 97.9 – 118.dBA. The noise levels were above the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible standard (85BA). The percentage occurrence of the self-reported noise effects among the sawmill workers was stress level (91.7%), irritation (26.7%), increased heart rate (5%), annoyance (30%), high blood pressure(30%), hearing difficulties (26.7%) and 21.7% for stress. These effects among the workers could be reduced through the correct and consistent use of hearing protection equipment such as ear muffs.
