Abstract
Heavy metals are released into the environment through various anthropogenic activities. These metals seep into the soil and ultimately plants including vegetables, which take them up causing health problems to human that consume them. This study was carried out to determine the level of heavy metals (Nickel, Cadmium and Mercury) and oxidative stress status in garden plant collected from ikpoba hill market and oba market in Benin City, Edo state Nigeria. Garden egg sample were collected randomly and stored in sterile bags, preserved in ice. Analysis for heavy metals content and antioxidant status was carried out using standard protocol. The result from this study when compared to WHO standard showed that Mercury was below the detection limit in both markets. Garden egg samples from Oba market has a higher concentration of Nickel (
0.69666
mg/kg) compared to Nickel at ikpoba hill (
0.032
mg/kg) However there was no significant difference between both of them (P>
0.05
). On the other hand cadmium concentration (
0.0066
mg/kg) was detected in oba market while at ikpoba hill market was absent while Mercury has ikpoba hill market has a Concentration of (
0.11066
mg/kg) while in oba market it was absent. Similar result was observed for Nickel and Cadium concentration between both market. There were varies concentration of antioxidants with GPx activity (
8.274
u/gP) in ikpoba hill market and (
4.610
u/gP) as the highest in both market. This implies the possibility of heavy metals contamination and induction of oxidative stress in garden eggplant. The health risk assessment result further buttress that Nickel in garden egg sample from ikpoba hill market may be harmful to human health. The difference in the concentration of heavy metals collected from the two different local government areas underscore the importance of monitoring heavy metals concentration in food sources and regional assessment to ensure food safety.
