ABSTRACT
The plant Annona muricata is a medicinal plant rich in Cyclo-hexapeptides, acetogenins, annonaceous acetogenins, and essential oils to which most of its ethnomedicinal benefits are ascribed. Some pharmacological activities includes cytotoxic, antioxidant, wound healing, anti-microbial activities. This research evaluated the protective potential of methanol extract of Annona muricata on bromate induced nephrotoxicity
Animals were given a single daily oral dose of KBrO3 (50 mg/kg body weight) and sacrificed after 28 days of treatment; control animals were not administered KBrO3. The administration of KBrO3 resulted in nephrotoxicity, visible from creatinine readings. These results suggest that the administration of a single dose of KBrO3 induces nephrotoxic effects such as the alteration of creatinine metabolism of the renal system in a reversible manner.
Six groups of rats were used in this study, with three groups of Wistar rats (5 rats per group) received Annona muricata extracts at doses of 200, 300 and 500mg/kg for 28 days via oral gavage. The rats were sacrificed on the 29th day, blood was collected via cardiac and abdominal aorta puncture and organ weights were obtained. Plasma creatinine was determined using appropriate assay kits as per manufacturer’s protocol.
The leaf extracts were observed to bring about a non-dose dependent decrease in plasma creatinine although to a small degree.
