ABSTRACT
This study explores the structure and function of negation in the Yoruba language, focusing on its syntactic, morphological, and semantic properties. By employing Government and Binding (GB) Theory—especially the advanced concepts of X-bar and Insertion theories—this research seeks to unravel the complexities of how various negation markers, specifically "kò," "kìí," "kó," and "má," operate within the diverse sentence structures of Yoruba. The findings reveal that negation in Yoruba is characterized by systematic patterns that also accommodate various tonal shifts, which are essential in conveying meaning. The study highlights that the positioning of negation markers within sentences is not arbitrary. Instead, it is influenced by both the structure of the sentence and the speaker's intent. Data for the study were meticulously collected through oral interviews with native speakers, ensuring that the insights gathered reflect authentic usage. This qualitative approach allowed for a detailed analysis of how negation interacts with other grammatical elements, particularly tense and aspect, as well as its relationship with the tonal aspects that are pivotal to meaning in Yoruba. The findings of the research reveal that negation in Yoruba adheres to a systematic yet inherently flexible pattern that is deeply influenced by tonal variations; these variations significantly affect interpretation and communicative effectiveness. The findings also reveal that each negative markers called negators appear in different syntactic frames. Moreover, the study uncovers how the positioning of negation markers is not arbitrary but is rather contingent on the overall sentence structure and the speaker's communicative intent. In addition to the syntactic analysis, this research delves into the pragmatic dimensions of negation within Yoruba discourse. It highlights the nuanced role of negation in conveying politeness, emphasis, and nuances of social hierarchy, thus reflecting broader cultural contexts. By contributing to the understanding of linguistic phenomena in African languages, this study also enhances the documentation of Yoruba grammar, providing valuable insights that can inform both linguistic theory and practical language education. Ultimately, this research aims to enrich the discourse surrounding negation and its multifaceted roles in communication, laying the groundwork for future studies in this area.
