ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to describe nasalization process and inherent nasal vowels in Ukwuani and how they are manifested in the language. There has been few works on th e phonological processes and the nasalisation in the language but not much attention has been given to the inherent nasal vowels in Ukwuani. This study seeks to distinguish nasalised vowels from the inherent nasal vowels in the language. The data collection method is primary, involving the audio record of competent native speakers between the ages of twenty-fifty and who have a clear understanding of the language. The data findings in this work, has been able to prove that nasalisation of vowels in Ukwuani are not only regressive as claimed by previous works but are both progressive and regressive. It serves also, to correct the notion of the existence of palatalised lateral sound in the language. The autosegmental phonological framework was adopted in the analysis of the datato further illustrate the transfer of nasal features from an oral nasal segment to an adjacent oral segment and also reveal the innateness of nasality feature of inherent nasal vowels.
