NAMING AS AN EXPRESSION OF CULTURAL IDENTITY IN URHOBO LANGUAGE

ABSTRACT

This research work investigate naming as an expression of cultural identity in the Urhobo language. The study seeks to show how names express cultural identity in Urhobo culture and other cultures. This work also shows clearly the different reasons for naming across different cultures and that names carry different meaning and are given in different context. this study also appraise naming in the Urhobo culture as a means of showcasing cultural identity. Despite the cultural importance of naming in Urhobo community, there are lack of comprehensive research on naming in the Urhobo community, therefore, the aim of this study is to address this lack. Also, the data collected on this study utilize a qualitative approach, incorporating participant observation and interviews with native speakers. Contemporary media sources were also consulted. Data collected for this study were analyzed descriptively. This work is based on Vygotsky (1978) socio-cultural theory, which highlights the importance of examining the cultural and historical context in which language and naming practices are situated. By adopting this framework, the study shows how naming practices are influenced by historical events, religious beliefs, social structures and traditional practices that shape the culture of a society. The finding of the research work were gotten from the data presented and analyzed. The finding shows that, parents often choose names for their children that can reflect their cultural ancestry, heritage and background and that Urhobo names carry significant meanings.
