Summary
This study revealed that a great variety of fungal spores constitute the airborne fungal population in Microbiology 250 lecture theatre, Environmental and management toxicology 250 lecture theatre and Optometry 500 lecture theatre. During the survey period, the mean difference of the fungal load ranged from (0.07*104 to 1.07*104 cfu/m3 ). According to the WHO’s guidelines, mean concentration of a combination of different fungus species should be less or equal to 150 cfu/m3 (Rao et al., 1996). As the results showed, mean concentration of fungi in the lecture theatres exceeded the WHO’s limit, hence the lecture theatres are not suitable for proper learning. The isolated fungal species were Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus n idulans, Penicillium italicum, Penicillium oxalicum, Cryptococcus neoformans, Choanophor spp., Botrytis cinearea, Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizopus spp. The predominant airborne fungi were Rhizopus spp., Fusarium oxysporum, and Penicillium oxalicum, with percentage occurrence at 21.88, 18.75 and 21.88 respectively. Unlike Elzbieta Ejdys (2007), who had Cladosporium herbarum, Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium chrysogenum as the most occurring fungi.
The composition of indoor mycobiota may differ significantly due to the nature and physicochemical properties of specific indoor environments, their use and the number of occupants, also not excluding the time of exposure to fungi. Results of most mycological analyses show that so-called indoor fungi of the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium as well outdoor fungi, or “field fungi”, such as Alternaria or Cladosporium, are recorded most frequently inside buildings (Levetin et al. 1995; Gutarowska et al. 2004). In his analysis of the species range of indoor air in 19 groups of building facilities used for different purposes, Zyska (2001) demonstrated 14 recurring species of the 227 identified fungi.
