MULTIPLE ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS AND ANNOYANCE: IMPACTS AND ADAPTION STRATEGIES IN KOSOFE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE

ABSTRACT

Stress, stressors and annoyance are common in our everyday interaction yet there is knowledge gap on what stimulates stress and its impact on our environment and ecosystems. This study investigated multiple environmental stressors and annoyances, the impacts and adaptation strategies in Kosofe local Government areas of Lagos State.

Primary data was collected with the aid of 380 returned questionnaires. A Stratified random Sampling technique was be employed to select neighbourhoods. This study made used of both descriptive and inferential statistical tools. A descriptive analysis and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to test for demographic and research question respectively with the aid of Microsoft Excel 2013 and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.

The result showed that the respondents were randomly distributed across the neighbourhoods such as Ketu Alapere (16.8%), Ketu -Ikosi (15.8%), Kosofe (14.2%) Agboyi (13.4%) and Mile 12 (39.7%).The highest proportion of respondents were business person/ trader with 37.89%. Some 19.21%, 42.89% and 35.26% of respondents were able to avoid annoying situation, adapt to annoying situation, and react to annoying situation respectively. However, 49.79% and 18.16% of the respondents agreed that their quality of life and wellbeing with respect to environment stressors is fair and poor respectively. A PCA test showed that there are 11 most important environmental stressors. The highest stressor was hunger (component 1) while the least was bad manner (In component 11). Government and non-Governmental stakeholders must collaborate to reduce the impact of the environmental stressors in Nigeria.
