ABSTRACT
This study investigated the relationship between teachers’ motivation and job performance in public primary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. The purpose/objective was to find the relationship between Motivation and teachers’ job performance in public primary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, six (6) research questions were raised, two were answered and four were hypothesized and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study was a descriptive survey, which adopted a correlational research design. The population of the study comprised of ninety-nine public primary schools with five-hundred and eighty-five (585) school teachers in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample was twenty percent (20%) of the total population of schools (teachers) selected using the multi-stage sampling technique, which gave a sample size of 20 public primary schools in the local government area. The research instrument were two set of questionnaires titled Teachers’ Motivation and Teachers Job Performance questionnaires respectively (TMQ & TJQ). The face and content validity were carried out to ascertain the validity of the instrument while the test-retest reliability was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. This gave an alpha value of 0.65 and 0.60 for TMQ and TJQ respectively. The mean and standard deviation were used to answer research question 1 and 2, while the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC) and the Fisher’s Z were used to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that the level of teachers; motivation and job performance were both high. In the same vein, it also show a relationship between Teachers’ motivation and Teachers’ Job performance. However, the study revealed that there is no significant difference in the relationship between teachers’ motivation and job performance based on sex/gender, years of experience and school location. Consequently, it was recommended that heads of school should be liberal, diplomatic and democratic in their dealing with teachers and pupils, so as to enable them become motivated to perform their job better. It was also recommended that effective mechanisms should be put in place by the government and school management for the promotion of teachers, and this should be done as at when due, so as enhance their job performance. Also recommended was the fact that, there should be a yearly awards for outstanding and diligent teachers, as this would go a long way to motivate others to perform better.
