ABSTRACT

This research work is based on the interference of Igbo on the English language. The work looks at how Igbo influences the speech of Igbo bilinguals. The aim of this work is not only to discuss the mother-tongue interference extensively but also to examine the interaction between English and the Igbo language as well as to determine the consequences of the interaction as it affects the use of these languages. The theoretical frame work used in carrying out this research is contact linguistics by Weinreich (1953). This theoretical frame work was able to   account for the effects of interference between the two languages. The method of data collection is the interview method. The data was collected from native speakers of the language and the instrument used for collecting the data was a recorder. The major finding in this work is that interference occurs as a result of two languages coming in contact and the degree of interference varies between individuals.
